There was no alpine start for this ascent, but he hiked up a mountain because it was there. More accurately, we hiked up a hill because it was there. Apparently it was also snow covered though, with the snow melting in the sunlight and dripping onto us (when it had tired of just brushing off onto us as we walked through snow dusted shrubbery).

After visiting the hill (Mt Torbreck, out near Taggerty and Eildon), we also found some of the melted snow hurling itself off a small cliff.

This was just a quick jaunt up a little obscure hill in Victoria. Fairly snowy, and so overgrown at the top that there wasn’t much of a view, even with the enormous cairn.

I’ve decided to enter the Scott (formerly the Mont) 24hr mountainbike race, held up near Canberra every year. Unfortunately due to high demand, all of the team places have been filled within five days of entries being open, so they’re only allowing solo entries from now on. Hence, I have decided to do it solo. Mad perhaps? Definitely. Laps of a 20km course, possibly lots of mud, definitely some single track, and laps in the dark. Probably lots of cold… possibly below freezing, even some snow if we’re lucky. I might have to start training. The aim is ten laps.

Here’s an artists impression of what the race will look like

Skiing on man-made snow is just a little bit depressing…

Also, I’m sorry, but I just don’t like donuts. What’s wrong with cake, or muffins, or cookies? These are all tasty.

On panthers…
“I am sorry the African panthers you had bought in such quantities did not turn up on the appointed day…”

On Christians…
“I have never been present at an examination of Christians. Consequently, I do not know the nature or the extent of the punishments usually meted out to them, nor the grounds for starting an investigation and how far it should be pressed…

For the moment this is the line I have taken with all persons brought before me on the charge of being Christians. I have asked them in person if they are Christians, and if they admit it, I repeat the question a second and third time, with a warning of the punishment awaiting them. If they persist, I order them to be led away for punishment…

They declared that the sum total of their guilt or error amounted to no more than this: they had met regularly before dawn on a fixed day to chant verses alternately among themselves in honor of Christ as if to a god…

This made me decide it was all the more necessary to extract the truth by torture from two slave-women, whom they call deaconesses. I found nothing but a degenerate sort of cult carried to extravagant lengths…”
